Activity 7: Thinking Tools

Two thinking tools known as slice and dice and scamper were used in the activity today.

These tools help us think new, fast and multiple ideas which makes our task easier by systematically dividing the information and breaking it into smaller parts.

MAIN ACTIVITY

Slice and dice

Slicing and dicing helps us identify and list various attributes of a problem which then helps us work on one attribute at a time to stimulate new ideas and the more you slice and dice a problem or challenge the more attributes you would be able to improve or change. It does not let you go vague in your ideas and help you to be more specific.

S.C.A.M.P.E.R

SCAMPER works by providing a list of words that associate with your problems and help come up with innovative ideas.

HOME TASK

Later, I practised the application of 3 tools, the outcomes of which are as follows:

Circle of opportunity

This tool helped me discover new ideas as it forced me to generate a connective link between the common attributes that I had listed and the challenge that I had decided for the given situation. I could easily generate new ideas from within a closed circle of common attributes and find out a solution for the same.

Crossbreeding

We could experiment by crossbreeding plants, objects, animals, and people in this task. I chose a turtle and a pineapple to experiment with, for this activity and came up with a cap which could be used in oil dispensers for pouring oil. The mouth of the turtle had a small opening so that the oil could be poured in a sufficient quantity and the tail could be used as a valve to open or close the opening. The shell of this turtle was replaced with that of a pineapple.

Idea box

This tool helped me quickly produce a number of ideas as the the parameters that I had listed for the table automatically combined and gave rise to new ideas in my mind. Further, listing down variations for each parameter expanded my options in that particular parameter and help me focus on one attribute from that parameter and generate an idea.

This task did save most of my time as I worked in an organised manner by logically segregating the information, at the same time I was able to come up with new ideas without wasting much of my time on thinking so much as using these tools laid down a variety of options in front of me out of which I could easily pick up one which was of utmost importance to me and work on it.

However, one thing to keep in mind while using the tools is that you have to list down as many options as you can so that the process becomes easier and faster, and helps you overcome the complexities.

Secondly, the group that stood out to me the most in this task was group 8 as the application of tools was done very well by them. The scamper was logically presented and well explained. Further, they covered all the components of scamper which I personally failed to do so in the activity.

LEARNING MANTRA OF THE DAY :

Don't be scared of the mistakes and have the courage to think about all the things that seem impossible.
