Activity 5: Challenging Assumptions

Assumptions: when we think of something to be true without any definite proof.

WARM UP ACTIVITY

Some of the assumptions that we listed in the warm up activity about tea were:

When we listed all these assumptions, we had to challenge one assumption out of the list that we had created.

Example: A common assumption that was made by most of us in the activity was that tea is a beverage that can only be enjoyed at home or at a roadside stall .

Then we saw how this company challenged this assumption by offering different flavours of tea and attracting customers to get out of their homes and have a cup of tea at their place.

MAIN ACTIVITY

The dish that was given to us for the main activity was samosa.

We had to further list down 40 assumptions on the given food item.

After listing down the assumptions our group challenged few of the assumptions out of the list and came out with an outcome of packed samosa which had variety of flavours and different shapes of samosa's in it.

We also challenged the common assumption of samosa being sold by piece through this packaged product.

REFLECTION

  • The challenges that our group selected were very reasonable and we were successful in facing those challenges, however we could have done a better job on the part where we listed down our assumptions.

  • Group 4 really stood out in listing down their assumptions. The mind map that they had created was very vast and open ended. They had further highlighted the assumptions that they had challenged, which was a very clear and an efficient way of communication.

  • Our group had been struggling in listing down 40 assumptions but then later we realised that all these assumption came out of our own experiences that we have had with this particular dish. Finally, our past experiences helped us list down more assumptions about this dish.

LEARNING MANTRA OF THE DAY :

Embrace and remember the little experiences that you have.
