Introduction to this project started with a very interesting quote by Walt Disney which said “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing” and now that I have completed this project, I am able to relate more to it.
I realised that how could I talk about something if I hadn’t had the experience of it and I could only gain that experience by doing something, by converting my thoughts into actions.
MANIPULATING PAPER
One of the techniques that I mastered during this project was burning the sunboard sheet and twisting it.
At first, I had cut out thin strips of the sheet with a pair of scissors. It was a difficult process to cut the sheet with a pair of scissors as it was cutting it in a direction opposite to the sheet.
The second step was to burn these strips with a candle and twist it in a short span of time.
There were fumes that were coming out while burning the strips and therefore it was necessary for me to wear a mask.
When I burnt the paper, it became very flexible and I was easily able to twist it without tearing it.
After the paper cooled down, it became very stiff and the shape did not ruin.
The burnt texture that was formed on these strips, gave them the resemblance of a burnt tree.
In this work I had to manipulate the property of newspaper in order to make it strong.
I did so by adding newspaper first into water and then dusting it with Multani mitti.
After making small cups of aluminium and applying the mixture on them, I baked them in the microwave which dried them and made them strong.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The Do’s and the Don’ts while using a paper cutter:
Do’s | Don’ts |
Slide the blade back into the cutter when not in use. | Never let your hand be underneath the blade specially while using a scale. |
Put back the cap of the x-acto knife when not in use. | Do not extend by more than one blade. |
Use a steel scale and a cutting mat while cutting. | Do not use plastic scales for cutting. |
Choose an appropriate cutter for the job. | Do not use old blades. |
I think that in the entire project this is the least effective work done by me because the density in this work is very less.
The area where I struggled the most was while making cups that were smaller in size as they kept on breaking.
If given a chance, I would try making the solution less watery and provide a smaller base to the mixture in order to reduce the size.
I will try placing them closer to each other.
CONCLUSION
The clearest point of the M2M learning is that in order to have a successful outcome you have to increase the density and decrease the size of the object in your work. This has been one of my key learnings in the project.
Some of the examples from my work :
The project had become quite overwhelming for me in the middle as I had to repeat the same process everyday until an unless the space was covered. However, the thought of starting the next pattern as soon as possible kept me engaged during the whole process.
This project did test my patience to a great extent and therefore one of the major strengths that I discovered in this project is my patience while doing something.
I would like to carry forward this consistency in future as well but with a little bit of speed into my working.
I am definitely curious about what the next project holds for me and the challenges that I face in that project.
As for now I would like to know more about how such a mundane thing like paper can have so many aspects attached to it. I want to know and experiment more with what else can be created with it.
