Part A

Materials and Techniques

I was introduced to a number of new materials during this project starting from the hose pipe to PVC electrical conduit, aluminium sheet etc.

Each material had it's own differences which helped me build up my experience and explore a wide range of variety.

Hose Pipe

These were some of my explorations which helped me understand the basic nature of a hose pipe and helped me in exploring more.

  • The pipe that I had been using was pretty thick and therefore very hard to cut with a pair of scissors because of which it took me a little bit of time getting neat outcomes .

  • I had to put a lot of pressure and keep the scissors stable while cutting it into small pieces so that it would not slip off because of the pipe being greasy from the outside.

  • I restricted myself from using the cutter as the grip would not come and I was unable to apply the right amount of pressure which consumed a lot more time than using the scissors.

  • The greasy nature of the pipe was also an obstacle for me while sticking two parts of it together as it would not stick, so I had to wash it before sticking it in order to remove the oil from the surface.

  • One thing that I enjoyed while working with this pipe was bending it and experiencing the flexibility of it.

  • The pipe was very easy to bend which enabled me to explore more with it.

PVC Electrical Conduit

Starting with the basics, The first thing that I learnt while using a PVC pipe was it's fragile and brittle nature to break easily and yet be strong enough to not get cut with a simple cutter snd majorly by the hack saw.

  • I had to maintain a very hard grip while cutting the pipe with the hacksaw otherwise the pipe would slip.

  • Certain amount of powdery particles shredded while I was cutting the pipe with the hacksaw.

  • Sometimes the pipe broke because of making the cuts very close to each other as it is very brittle and applying pressure very close enough ends up breaking the pipe.

  • The pipe is very thin, almost like a thick paper and therefore I could make spirals with my hands directly, without using any tool.

  • The spirals came out to be very neat as there was no friction of some rough tool such as the hacksaw on the pipe.

  • I was also able to cut the pipe with a pair of scissors very easily because of it's thin walls.

  • The scissors would run very smoothly on the pipe and I had to put very little pressure unlike the hose pipe.

  • Cutting the pipe into very thin strips made it flexible to an extent which helped me bend it into different ways with the help of pliers.

Aluminum Sheet

The aluminium sheet can be manipulated in many ways.

  • The first thing that I realised was that it is hard to bend a plain piece of sheet as a lot of pressure was required to bring a certain type of outcome.

  • However, when I had cut the sheet into a number of strips, it helped me bend it into curls with the help of the pliers.

  • A lot pressure was applied in order to cut it with scissors.

  • The sheet is very shiny and can be used in places where lights are to be reflected.

  • The sheet had to be bended only with the help of a pliers as it had become very sharp after I had cut it.

  • Embossing was one thing that I enjoyed the most as it would create a lot of patterns on the sheet.

  • I had to apply the right amount of pressure in order get the pattern on the other side and there was always a depression on one side of the sheet.

Creative Tools Or Thinking Tools & Techniques

Iterative Process: I used iteration throughout this project to improvise my ideas while working on them.

New possibilities : Asking the "what if" helped me bring variety into my explorations and explore till I satisfied my question. For eg: after cutting the PVC into thin strips I thought what if I make small curls out of it and what would happen if I curled them outside or inside.

Visual Expressions : Since we had to give a name to each exploration we made, this played a major role in my learning. A lot of the names were given through the feelings that I had while looking at my explorations and a lot were made by keeping in mind the emotion. This helped me make sense of what I made by the end of the day.

Part B

Concept Note

SONDER

Sonder is the profound, individual realisation that each person you meet is living their own life, that each person has their own world fitted with their own personal worries, pleasure and pain, same as yourself in a sense but also as intricate and as different as could be imagined.

The intangible part here is the feeling about how each individual needs someone or the other to survive regardless of the differences found in each other and how normal of a concept it looks like when I see it happen in my day to day life. Humans beings are social beings and this nature helps them stay united and as one with each other as they weave their way through it.

Intangible to tangible : My final outcome was based on this emotion. The final outcome had three different elements in it, fitted to one another.

The inner circles were made up of acrylic sheet, the outer black base and a white woollen thread weaving through the holes inserted.

Through this I wanted to communicate how these 3 elements were different and yet complimented each other when put together and supported each other to stand stable and united because even if one element went missing, the others would fall apart. The thread helped the bases from separating and the cuts in the base held the circle and vice versa.
