LJL FVL: 1

The very first day of this project, we were told that we would have to leave our old baggage of learning behind and start fresh. I think, this one line had stuck into my mind since then and therefore I was able to work with full freedom and without a fear of judgement in this project.

I think visual skill is the ability to look at visuals and further weave them . During this project I realised the potential of a dot and line, about how one can never ignore the dots and lines in their life while doing something.

Language is a medium for communication and in this entire project dots and lines were a major component of communicating our design or work in front of others.

The first day of this project did make me question the reason behind making a line bank but it all made sense to me later because I realised that if I had not done this on the first day, I would have not been able to learn the basic concept behind how can we represent something with a dot. I realised about how dots have the power to change the appearance of a composition.

We started representing the lines from the line bank with circular and square dots to get the basic understanding about how to go about it. At first, I drew small dots which easily represented the line but later when we were asked to make them bigger, it came to me as a challenge and then I realised that it is not the line that we have to copy but the notion of it that we have to keep in mind while drawing it, which later improved my composition.

THEMATIC REPRESENTATION

RAIN

This was my very first attempt to showcase a thematic representation of rain on the next day of this project, however the outcome did not satisfy me as I thought that somehow this was not something that connected to rain.

I was trying to transfer that feeling of rain onto my sheet and the 3 dimensional structure that I see when it pours but when I saw my sheet, I realised that this is not what rain looks like, the droplets cannot be so big, it did not have any variation of density in it and I have never seen it pouring like that. Overall I was unable to connect to this work and therefore I gave it another try.

The second attempt was quite satisfactory. I made dots that were placed very close to each other on the top of the sheet and the distance between them gradually increased as they reached the bottom of the sheet. This helped me achieve the variation in density that I see when it rains.

Further in order to bring that 3 dimensionality in my representation, I used dots of various shades and sizes with the help of shading pencils. Dots which were larger and darker were close to the eyes of the viewer and as they got smaller and lighter the distance between the eyes of the viewer and the rain increased and helped me bring the depth in my representation.

CONFUSION

Now that I had been accustomed to the process of keeping the notion in my mind and effectively transforming it onto the sheet, my compositions had started becoming better.

In this I tried achieving the theme of confusion by using least number of square dots and not shading them. I changed the angles of square dots and arranged them in different ways to achieve that confusion.

Even though my previous outcome had been successful, it did not have the depth in it. In order to bring that depth and achieve more confusion in my representation, I again used different shades of pencils in it and realised that the outcome had turned out to be much better even after decreasing the number of square dots.

DAILY DRAWING DOCUMENT (DDD)

I think that this is the least effective work done by me so far as I had not followed the proper procedure of drawing a basic sketch of an object.

Compared to that I think that this is one of the most effective drawing done by me so far as I took use of lines and circles in order to make the basic outline of this sketch. The lines and circles that i had created in the start helped me divide different parts of this object on the sheet and make a symmetrical sketch.

CONCLUSION

The muddiest point in this project was when we had to create different textures. At the end of this project I had been so accustomed to these dots that it had now confused me while making textures. It was however cleared later that we had the freedom to do anything in order to bring that effect in the texture that we were creating.

The clearest point in this project had been the usage of different type of dots to make a meaningful composition.

Further I learnt about how we can use different dots in order to indicate the composition of an object.

I am now confident that I can use this method in future to understand the basic composition of any object.

One thought that rose amongst us while we were doing this project was "how many circles does one need in order to represent a given shape?", their was a long discussion that took place around this, which gave rise to a lot of questions in my mind and I think that I would need years of experience in order to get an answer to this simple yet so confusing question because the answer does not end in keeping a notion of that shape, it might just have more to it.
